Arthrography of the ankle joint in the diagnosis of injuries of the lateral ligaments

Arthrographies (105) were carried out on 105 patients. Fifty-five arthrograms were abnormal and 39 patients were submitted to operation. Arthrograms were assessed retrospectively on the basis of definite criteria and the radiographic and operative diagnoses were compared. Special attention was paid to the differential diagnosis between isolated rupture of the anterior talo-fibular ligament and lesion of this ligament plus the calcaneo-fibular ligament. Spread of the radio-opaque agent is a better diagnostic criterion than filling of the peroneal tendon sheath. This latter finding can only support the diagnosis of rupture of the calcaneo-fibular ligament but is not diagnostic alone.
