Bird poisoning following the use of warble fly treatments containing famphur

On 3 occasions recently in the UK, birds have been found dead in the immediate vicinity of cattle that had just been treated with famphur to control warble flies [Hypoderma]. Post-mortem examinations showed that the birds (magpies (Pica pica), robins (Erithacus rubecula) and a dunnock (Prunella modularis)) died of famphur poisoning. Similar poisoning of magpies has been reported from the USA.
