This compact pressure-cycled ventilator is driven by oxygen or compressed air at a pressure of between 25 lbs. and 100 lbs. per square inch, the driving gas being delivered with or without entrained air. The manufacturers recommend that it should be driven by compressed air whenever possible with controlled oxygen added by means of parallel inspiratory flow mixing cartridges, but if this equipment is not available, most patients respond well to treatment with a mixture of oxygen as the driving gas and entrained atmospheric air. However, if the patient shows signs of becoming more drowsy, the situation must be reviewed.
