Disturbances of the orienting response extinction in post-meningoencephalitic epilepsy

A polygraphic study on resistance to extinction of the somatic, autonomic and EEG components of the orienting response elicited by a repetitive auditory stimulus was performed in 29 patients with post-meningoencephalitic epilepsy and in 116 matched subjects in 3 control groups. The study evidenced a significantly higher resistance to extinction of the orienting response in patients with post-meningoencephalitic epilepsy than in control subjects. The degree of extinction disturbances depends on the features of the EEG tracings and on the history, electro-clinical form and frequency of seizures.
