Clinical usefulness of the nitroblue tetrazolium reduction test in adnexitis

The results of the nitrotetrazolium blue reduction test (NBT) in women with acute and chronic adnexitis were analyzed and the values of NBT spontaneous index were compared with the blood sedimentation rate (BSR) and peripheral blood leukocytes' count (WBC). The examinations covered 92 women aged from 16-49 yr, treated because of adnexitis. A control group of 21 healthy women in the same age range was examined. The NBT was performed in all women immediately after admission to the clinic; repeat testing was performed in 28 women in the 14th day of treatment in the course of improvement of the clinical state. In women with acute and chronic adnexitis, the index of spontaneous reduction of NBT is higher. Antiinflammatory treatment led to significant decrease of the reduction index. The spontaneous reduction index may serve as a valuable diagnostic test in cases of inflammatory states as well as a test of therapeutic progress. Greater attention must be paid to the problems of cellular immunity in women with adnexitis.
