The NBT [nitro-blue tetrazolium] test was used in 1679 persons. The mean value of the test in 150 healthy persons was 8.53%. The highest values of the test (42.42%) were observed in the group of patients with diseases caused by bacterial infections before the beginning of treatment. In the patients with non-inflammatory diseases of the nervous system and in convalescents after pneumonia the test values did not differ significantly from those in the control group. Significantly higher NBT test values were found in patients with viral diseases, rheumatism and in the cases of generalized neoplastic processes. In postoperative and post-traumatic non-complicated conditions the test values were only slightly increased and were below the upper limit of the test values in healthy persons; with suppurative complications the mean value of the test was 37.08%. A correlation was found between the number of NBT-positive granulocytes with leukocytosis, neutrocytosis and reaction of red blood cells sedimentation.
