Critical analysis of pneumographic methods of recording respiration

Impedance pneumography may be used under clinical conditions to evaluate the depth of respiration during corresponding calibration according to a spirogram. When individual calibration of the error is used in determining the depth of respiration, it is on the order of 10-25%. Impedance pneumogram possesses certain advantages over a thoracic pneumogram with respect to amplitude and phase error. The use of impedance pneumograms instead of spirograms for evaluation of the mechanics of respiration may lead to significant errors (up to 50%) during computation of the work of respiration and had practically no effect on the evaluation of the magnitude of mean alveolar pressure. A single-component model satisfactorily describes the relationship between a spirogram and a barogram, which reflects the change in the volume of the thorax in healthy humans. It should also describe other parameters of the mechanics of respiration in healthy humans.
