Mitogenic lectins (concanavalin A and phytohemagglutinin) increase the binding of Ca ions to lymphocytes (rat, human) that may be found by fluorescent or radiometric methods. Introduction of EGTA ethyleneglycol-bis(.beta.-aminoethyl ether) N,N,N'N'-tetraacetic acid in lymphocyte suspension leads to the removal of Ca associated with the cell surface, leaving a considerable amount of 45Ca inaccessible to EGTA. 45Ca may be found in the interior of lymphocyte cytoplasmic membranes or in the cytoplasm.
