Trends in breast feeding: impressions from an urban educated community

Breast feeding practices were studied among 100 educated mothers aged 20-25 yr who had received regular antenatal care. Babies (73) were not fed exclusively on breast milk for any length of time while only 12 were completely breast fed for at least 4 wk although 97 mothers stated they had desired to breast feed. Of the mothers 5 had received advice regarding breast feeding during the antenatal period and none had read any book or literature on the subject despite being educated. The commonest reason offered for top feeding was insufficiency of breast milk though this was found untenable in most instances.
