Practical aspects in the immunodiagnosis of toxoplasmosis

The indirect hemagglutination test (IHT), dye test (DT) and complement fixation test (CFT) were performed on sera of 17,627 patients suspected of having toxoplasmosis. An agreement was found between IHT and DT on 15,399 sera (87.4%) and no correlation on the remaining 2228 (12.6%) sera. DT had higher sensitivity than IHT, especially with no correlating sera at high titers. CFT was positive in 532 (3.5%) concordant sera and in 594 (26.7%) discordant sera. A higher proportion of positive CFT (25.3%) was found at high titers. IHT and DT have similar sensitivity, presenting no correlation at high titers. CFT becomes positive in acute or reactivated cases. The importance of plotting a serological curve is discussed.
