Immunoglobulins and C3 levels in Plasmodium vivax infection and their relationship to haemagglutination antibody titres

Serum immunoglobulin (IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE) and C3 levels were estimated in 50 cases of Plasmodium vivax infection and in 50 healthy controls matched for sex and age. In 8 patients, a second sample at an interval of 2 weeks was also obtained for the study of IgG, IgM and IgA levels. IgM and IgG levels were found to be significantly higher in the patients in the acute phase as compared to the controls. This rise was statistically correlated with the malarial antibody titres, as detected by the indirect haemagglutination test. In the repeat samples, IgM levels showed a drop while IgG levels continued to show a rising trend. No significant change was observed in the IgE and C3 levels. [AS].
