Pregnant rats were fed on a purified diet with Zn 100 mu g/g (complete) or 0.4 mu g/g (deficient) from the day of mating. On day 4 of pregnancy, the Zn concentration of uterine fluid in rats on the deficient diet was only half that of controls, although protein concentration was the same. It is suggested that the low concentration of Zn in uterine fluid is responsible for the reported abnormal development of preimplantation embryos.
