In an experiment in which cows were fed Zn-poor or Zn-enriched diets, red-coloured coat hair showed significant reduction of Zn content only after 13 weeks of Zn-poor diet, while a very high Zn intake of 436 ppm dry matter was required to cause a clear increase in the coat hair Zn content. Tail hair was little affected by changes in Zn intake. It was concluded that the Zn status of dairy cows could not be satisfactorily assessed by analyzing hair.
