The gradual transfer of ingestion from infantile to adult modes has given rise to the concept of suckling as a primitive reflex precursor of adult ingestion. This concept is here rejected in favour of the case for a closer look at complex and overlapping forms of control, including reference to the possibility that some internal control can be found in rats at a very early age under certain test conditions.
