A procedure for quantitative determination of SH- and SS-groups in biological materials based on iodometric titration of SH-groups according to the Uzbekov's method is described. The procedure provides conditions for stolchiometric interaction of iodine with the thiol groups. Conditions for reduction and quantitative determination of the protein SS-groups and low molecular compounds were defined. High sensitivity (0.06-0.1 .mu.M of thiol) and specificity of the procedure, its simplicity and accuracy are shown. The procedure was used for dynamic investigation of the SH- and SS-metabolism over 24 h in healthy persons and over 10 days in patients with fractures of the maxilla. Maximum accumulation of SH-groups and decreased concentrations of SS-groups in the blood serum of healthy persons took place once a day in the morning. In patients with typical (noncomplicated) recovery the concentration of SH-groups in the blood serum was subjected to rythmic changes depending on the period from the moment of the fracture. Maximum accumulation of SH-groups was recorded on the 2nd, 5th and 9th days and decreased concentrations of -SS groups were recorded on the 3rd-4th, 7th-8th and 10th-11th days of the fracture treatment. In patients with fractures complicated by osteomyelitis a suspending of the biological rythm of the thiol metabolism at high levels for SH-groups was observed during the 1st 5 days of treatment which was indicative of insufficient reposition of the bone fragments.
