Since pulse pressure (PP) is influenced by stroke volume and arterial volume elasticity, a change in stroke volume should be reflected in the change in PP/DP DP can be regarded as an index of afterload because the heart must push the blood out against the DP across the aortic valve at the 1st beginning of the contraction phase. PP/DP-DP relation could substitute for the force velocity relationship. The manner of reflection of change in stroke volume in PP/DP was detected in 118 volunteers by measuring their resting blood pressure with assumption of their almost equal O2 consumption per m2. PP/DP was calculated from arterial pressure. PP/DP-DP was plotted on the diagram for several typical clinical cases of cardiogenic shock, pheochromacytoma and high epidural anesthesia. The usefulness of PP/DP-DP diagram was discussed from clinical points of view.
