The effect of various types of interference in healthy humans and in patients with affection of various brain structures was compared. The effect of masking depended not only on the intensity of the brain affliction, but on the temporal relationships between the effect of signal and masking stimuli. In healthy humans and in patients with extraoccipital foci, simultaneous and reverse masking had the greatest effect; double and direct had the least. In patients with affected occipital structures, in whom the masking effect was more marked, especially in the case of right-lateral localization, simultaneous and double masking had the strongest effect. In all subjects the effect of interference showed up more in signal identification than in its detection. The mechanism of interference-resistance of the visual system appears to involve 2 closely related aspects: the interrelationship of the test and masked stimuli in a mixed interval form (signal + interference); and scanning of the filtration process. The final effect of masking depends on the characteristics of the intergral form and scanning of filtration.
