A critical efficacy test of cambendazole in equids: the use of the geometric means to assess efficacy

Five horses and one donkey were treated with cambendazole 44.5% paste at 20 mg/kg body-weight. Strongyle eggs disappeared from the faeces after 2 to 4 days. The geometric means of the numbers of worms passed in the faeces and of the numbers remaining in the alimentary tract at slaughter were calculated. The data show that > 99% of strongyles, 94% of cyathostomes, 89% of immature and > 99% of mature Oxyuris equi, > 99% of Probstmayria vivipara and 97% of Habronema muscae had been eliminated. Parascaris equorum and Anoplocephala perfoliata (each present in small numbers in single animals) were also removed.
