A 6-year-old girl from Elbeuf, France, contracted Plasmodium vivax malaria, although no history of foreign travel, blood transfusion, use of a syringe or visits in the vicinity of an airport were recorded. However, the child had stayed with an uncle who had contracted malaria in Indochina in 1950 (and who may still have been infected with gametocytes) and it is suggested that a local mosquito may have transmitted the infection from the uncle to the child.
