Spermatozoa, during their migration from the epididymus to the female genital tract, undergo a complex series of transformation and fusion of membranes. The first fusion takes place as soon as spermatozoa get in contact with the pellucid zone. Other, and more important fusions, happen between the plasmic membrane of the ovocyte and the equatorial segment of the spermotozoon, and between the cortical membranes and the plasmic membrane of the ovocyte. The lipid components of the 2 membranes seem to cause both fusions.
