Human newborns (150) were explored with gray scale mode B echoencephalography. The transfontanellary scan is stressed. This ultrasonic advance, which overcomes the bone barrier, is ideal for exploratoin of the ventricles and the cerebral parenchyma to detect ventricular hemorrhage and malformation. This technique is easily reproducible and without irradiation. The transfontanellary scan is recommended for neuroradiologic explorations of newborns.
