The cytotoxicity of some therapeutic nitroaromatic compounds was studied on mammalian cells cultured in vitro. The cytotoxic effect, which was dependent on the time of incubation in the presence of the compound and its concentration, was observed over a relatively wide range of concentrations: from micromolar to millimolar. The cytotoxic action of the nitroaromatic compounds on mammalian cell cultures is manifested as cytostatic and acute, or as cytocidal and chronic. Niclosamide and nitrofuran derivatives produce more pronounced cytostatic effects, while nitroimidazole derivatives, nitroxoline and nitrazepam exert cytostatic and cytocidal effect in the same concentration range.
