Current knowledge about primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, due to Naegleria fowleri, is reviewed 15 years after its first clinical recognition by Fowler and Carter in South Australia. The parasitology, epidemiology, pathology, virulence and immunity, and diagnosis, prevention and treatment are considered.
