Competitive exclusion of salmonellas from the newly hatched chick

An artificial oral infection of Salmonella typhimurium failed to survive in the caeca of chicks pretreated with a caecal suspension from a freshly killed hen, but untreated controls became heavily infected. Lactobacilli from protected chicks and other sources failed to confer protection when given alone, or with cultures of Bacteroides vulgatus and Bifidobacterium sp., or with two strains of Bifidobacterium sp. plus an unidentified anaerobe. The most severe Salmonella infections occurred in chicks from which all coliforms had been eliminated by the "protecting" cultures, and microscopical examination showed much simpler microflora.
