The effect of dietary inclusions of tallow on the citric acid and soluble calcium content of cow's milk

During a 3-wk experimental period, 4 Ayrshire cows in mid-lactation were given a high-fat diet of chopped hay/concentrate mixture (30:70) containing barley/soya bean meal/tallow (55:33:12). In the preceding and following 3-wk periods, the cows were given a similar diet, but with low-fat concentrate containing barley/soya bean meal (80:20). Inclusion of tallow in the diet significantly increased the content of fat (P < 0.05), citric acid (P < 0.01) and soluble Ca in milk. Effects of dietary tallow on fatty acid synthesis by the mammary gland are discussed briefly.
