Morphometric examination of the adrenal glands in experimental chronic nitrous oxide poisoning and after neutralization with ammonia

In animals poisoned with nitrogen oxides in a concentration of 1 mg/m3 for 8 h daily for 120 days, in animals exposed to the reaction products of nitrogen oxides with ammonia and in a group of control animals measurements were made of the thickness of the individual layers of the cortical portion of the adrenals, the volume of cell nuclei in the individual layers of the adrenal cortex and the volume of cells in the adrenal medulla. There is a decrease in the thickness of the zona fasciculata and a tendency to decreased thickness of the zona glomerulosa and zona reticularis in animals with chronic nitrogen oxide poisoning. A statistically significant decrease in the volume of the cell nuclei in the glomerular and fascicular zones in animals exposed to the action of nitrogen oxides was also found. The neutralization of nitrogen oxides by gaseous ammonia only partially normalized these disturbances. In the group of animals exposed to the reaction products of nitrogen oxides with ammonia the volume of the adrenal cells, although larger than in the grop of animals poisoned with nitrogen oxides, never reached the values found in the control group.
