Structural and functional characteristics of erythrocyte membranes were studied in rabbits with alimentary atherosclerosis. In animals with single spots in the aorta a considerable increase of cholesterol concentration in plasma is accompanied by an increase of the cholesterol/phospholipid ratio and a decrease in Na+, K+-ATPase activity of erythrocyte membranes. Spin probe ESR data testify to changes of structural membrane characteristics - the degree of ordering of fat-acid lipid chains increases and the limits of temperature interval of phase reconstructions in membranes are extended. In rabbits with total aortic damage a further increase of cholesterol concentration in plasma, cholesterol/phospholipids ratio and structural changes of erythrocyte membranes do not result in a further reduction of enzyme activity. In aorta homogenates of the studied animals Na+, K+-ATPase activity changed simultaneously with the activity of this enzyme in erythrocyte membranes. Similar chemical and structural changes may occur in membranes of aortic cells. Damage of smooth muscle cell membranes and alterations of membrane enzymes activity may occur in atherosclerosis.
