The findings in 5 patients with unclassified chronic liver disease, are reported. These patients had associated features of primary biliary cirrhosis and features of chronic active hepatitis. The clinical, laboratory, immunological and morphological criteria values used for the discrimination between the 2 entities is presented. A corticosteroid therapeutic test was performed in 2 patients. In 1 of them, the test did not permit any discrimination: although the clinical and histological signs of chronic active hepatitis disappeared during the treatment, histological features of primary biliary cirrhosis developed.
