Pathological and biochemical changes in the liver and testes of the desert gerbil Meriones hurrianae (Jerdon) : effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of phorate (thimet)

A single i.p. injection of phorate (thimet) (2.5 mg/kg) to the desert gerbil showed mild to serve pathological and biochemical changes. Liver showed cloudy swelling of hepatocytes, cytoplasmolysis and cytoplasmic vacuolization. Nuclei of hepatocytes revealed karyolysis and karyorrhexis. Seminiferous tubules showed necrosis, enlarged interstitium and giant cells. Activity of alkaline and acid phosphatases in liver and testes increased while that of ATPase decreased significantly. Glucose-6-phosphatase activity decreased in liver but increased in testes.
