The importance of using highly efficient serological tests in surveys for toxoplasmosis, particularly in neonates, is stressed. The technique should preferably have been validated by one or more of the following methods: (1) isolation of Toxoplasma gondii from tissues or fluids of the patient; (2) detection of typical lesions, preferably together with organisms identical with T. gondii; (3) demonstration of a rising or stable high titre in the Sabin-Feldman dye-test or equivalent test. The deficiencies of the IFAT for congenital toxoplasmosis are pointed out.
