Clinical and laboratory data on 100 children with malaria seen over a one-year period in India are reviewed. 95 of the children presented with fever and 75 had rigours and chills. Splenic and hepatic enlargement were common findings (in 58 and 36 respectively). Gastro-intestinal, respiratory and central nervous system symptoms were seen in 37, 5 and 5, respectively. Moderate to severe anaemia was seen in 58 children. Malaria parasites could be detected in only 50 of the children (Plasmodium vivax in 49 and P. falciparum in one). A standard course of chloroquine for 3 days was successful in 90 cases (including all the parasite-negative cases). In the remaining patients quinine + tetracycline, or cotrimoxazole in standard dose schedules proved satisfactory.
