The procedure is described with the help of 17 colour plates and 5 diagrams. It is considered to have the advantages of providing adequate access for exploration of the peritoneal cavity and performing rumenotomy, causing minimal haemorrhage, requiring minimal suturing and being situated so that anatomical stress on the incision line is minimal during healing. Use of the muscle spreading technique for paralumbar caesarean sections is also described.
