Pathological study of a surgical series of benign tumoral lesions of the liver

Seven specimens of tumorectomy or partial hepatectomy for benign tumors were analyzed according to the anatomopathological criteria defined by Edmonson. In 6 of them, apparently solitary foci of nodular hyperplasia were observed. The 7th contained, besides 2 large masses, several small disseminated nodules. One of the bigger masses was a hepatocellular adenoma, the other as well as the small nodules corresponded to focal nodular hyperplasias. Systematic microscopic study of the focal nodular hyperplasias demonstrated extended alterations of the vascular network suggesting the existence of an abnromal pressure gradient inside the tumors. These modifications could be interpreted as the consequence of a localized lesion, congenital or acquired, of the portal veins.
