In some villages in the Gezira, Sudan, physiological studies were made on 14 adult males infected with Schistosoma mansoni, on 37 uninfected villagers and on 19 canal cleaners who were more heavily infected. There was a significant difference of 18% in maximum aerobic power output between villagers and canal cleaners respectively but not between non-infected villagers and those with light infections. In men passing >2,000 epg faeces the physical working capacity was less than in men passing <1000 epg. Villagers had a significantly higher mean haemoglobin concentration than canal cleaners.
