Fifty patients with severe hookworm anaemia were given one of 3 iron preparations: 20 were treated with Plexafer (a slow-release ferrous sulphate preparation) one tablet daily for 36 days; 15 were given 250 mg Imferon intramuscularly on alternate days; 15 were given a total dose infusion of Imferon (TDI). All 3 treatments were equally effective. 3 patients given TDI had hypersensitivity reactions with urticaria and 2 others developed thrombophlebitis. 5 patients given intramuscular Imferon developed local oedema and tenderness at the injection site. No side-reactions were noted in patients receiving Plexafer.
