In Salisbury, Zimbabwe, 122 consecutive hospital patients with gross splenomegaly were investigated during March 1976 to September 1978. Histological examination of bone marrow, lymph node or liver provided the diagnosis in most cases. Schistosomiasis was the most common cause of the splenomegaly, occurring in 35 cases (29%). The uses of histology and peritoneoscopy in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis are discussed.
