Hematological studies of boars during testing for breeding suitability

Studies were conducted into haemoglobin and haematocrit levels as well as into mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentrations (MCHC) of venous blood samples which had been collected from 600 boars, aged between 180 and 200 days and weighing between 90 kg and 100 kg. The following values, per 100 millilitres of erythrocytes, were obtained: 13.36 +/- 1.06 g of haemoglobin, 42.16 +/- 3.3 per cent of haematocrit, and 31.74 +/- l.6 g of MCHC. Seven random samples were investigated, and the following values were beyond normal limits: 34.91 per cent of haemoglobin (22.22-44.91 per cent), 23.96 per cent of haematocrit (12.28-46.16 per cent), and 61.89 per cent of MCHC (35.08-78.94 per cent). The above results were compared with those which had been obtained from the same animals, when aged between 105 and 110 days and weighing between 40 kg and 45 kg. Due consideration was given also to the origin of the animals which had come from four different farms as well as to the extent to which deficit situations had developed and to disorders in haematopoiesis.
