Propane-1,2-diol (propylene glycol) is used in diverse pharmaceutical preparations and also as a solvent for various pharmacological agents. Feeding of propane-1,2-diol at a dose level of 0.284 ml/100 g body wt decreased erythrocyte sedimentation rate, total leukocyte count and glutathione. Activities of acid phosphatase [EC 3.1.2.1], ATPase [EC 3.6.1.3], and 5'-nucleotidase [EC 3.1.3.5] and total protein content of erythrocyte were significantly increased, whereas the activity of acetylcholinesterase [EC 3.1.1.7] was decreased. Treatment of erythrocyte with Triton X-100 (0.1%) brought an increase in protein content followed by an elevation of the activities of all the enzymes, propane-1,2 diol effect persisted with high statistical significance.
