Resurgence of nutritional rickets associated with breast-feeding and special dietary practices

Clinical case studies of nutritional rickets diagnosed in 10 infants 0-14 months of age point to an association of the disease with unsupplemented breastfeeding, fad "health food" diets, and absence of immunizations. Patients and their mothers were minimally exposed to sunlight. Oral calciferol reversed clinical symptoms. It is suggested that vitamin supplementation of the breast-fed infant is advisable, despite lack of such a recommendation from the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition, the pediatrician should review the nutritional status of patients on restricted or unusual diets. Lack of immunizations in the patient's medical history might also alert the pediatrician to examine whether special dietary practices were involved. Recognition of such practices may lead to early diagnosis of nutritional rickets and prompt intervention.
