A bacterial culture LIA-0953 was isolated from a soil sample. The culture was characterized. By its morphological, cultural and physiological features culture LIA-0953 was close to A. simplex but differed from it by the antibiotic properties and capacity for starch hydrolysis. Culture LIA-0953 was classified as a new species designated as A. simplex var. amylolyticus var. nov. It produced an antibiotic complex consisting of 2 components, i.e., a nonpolyene antibiotic and hexaene. The hexaene antibiotic had a low activity against fungi and yeasts but affected bacteria. The most pronounced activity of the substance was observed with respect to Emmonsia crescens. It was shown with the method of counter-current distribution that the hexaene antibiotic was similar by the distribution coefficient to the antibiotics of the fradicin-mycelin group. The physicochemical properties of the hexaene were compared with those of the known hexaenes. The antibiotic isolated is a new hexaene antibiotic; it was named arthrobacterin.
