Adenylate cyclase, extracted from rabbit heart membrane by non-ionic detergents, lost part of its activity as compared with original membranes. After removal of Lubrol PX with DEAE cellulose, the solubilized basal enzyme activity was enhanced by either total phospholipids prepared from rabbit liver and brain, or by phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol. Total phospholipids caused a slight increase of basal activity and isoproterenol stimulation but had no effect on the Gpp(NH)p stimulation of the original rabbit heart membrane and inhibited Gpp(NH)p stimulation of the solubilized adenylate cyclase after removal of Lubrol PX. Phospholipids had a stabilizing effect on the solubilized adenylate cyclase stored at 4.degree. C for 24 h.
