Effects of ethanol (40%) on gastric potential difference and net fluxes of electrolytes through gastric mucosa were studied in controls and cimetidine (40 mg/kg) treated dogs. Ethanol instillation to gastric mucosa significantly increased net fluxes of Na and K. Cimetidine administration alone decreased net fluxes of Na and K and significantly raised potential difference. Ethanol instillation to cimetidine group significantly increased Na and K despite significantly lower basal values for ion fluxes and higher gastric potential difference. Effect of ethanol on gastric potential difference was similar in both groups; following ethanol instillation, gastric potential difference significantly decreased to identical levels. Pre-treatment with cimetidine was unable to prevent effects of ethanol on gastric potential difference and net fluxes of electrolytes.
