In vitro methylation of histones and non-histone chromosomal (NHC) proteins and its modulation by epinephrine were studied using slices of the cerebral cortex of young, adult (15) and old (84 wk) female albino rats. Methylation of histones is highest in old rats. Epinephrine inhibits methylation of histones of young rats but stimulates it in the old. Different histones are differentially methylated. Methylation of NHC proteins decreases with age as also the inhibitory effect of epinephrine on this modification. A few NHC proteins show differential methylation. The degree of methylation of different chromosomal proteins at different ages may alter the configuration of chromatin and alter the response of specific genes to stimuli.
