NANA [N-acetylneuraminic acid] fractions in gastric juice of persons suffering from gastric diseases revealed deficiency in NANA glycoproteins that may be associated with a decrease in their synthesis or with suppression of their secretion. During exacerbation of severe atrophic gastritis and peptic ulcer, deficiency of glycoproteins is caused by a decrease in their synthesis whereas in gastric carcinoma by a decrease in their secretion; under these conditions the residues of NANA are transferred to the surface of the cells forming an elevated negative charge with subsequent uncontrolled cell division.
