FSH [follicle stimulating hormone, follitropin] and LH [luteinizing hormone, lutropin] activity and the urine concentrations of estrogens and 17-ketosteroids were estimated in 50 girls and young women with secondary ovarian incompetence. The estimations were performed in basic conditions and after injection of LH-RH [luteinizing hormone releasing hormone, luliberin]. In the idiopathic forms of hypothalamosis syndrome a statistically significant increase in basic LH activity was demonstrated in relation to all other forms of the syndrome. The FSH concentrations were normal or on upper normal levels in all subjects. After stimulation with LH-RH, FSH and LH activities increased in all subjects which was a proof of preserved functional sensitivity of the pituitary to the administered hormone. An increase in estrogens concentration in hypothalamosis syndrome after the LH-RH administration was an effect of stimulatory activity of the endogenous gonadotropins upon the ovary. Notwithstanding the etiopathogenetic difference between the idiopathic hypothalamosis, hirsutism and Stein-Leventhal syndromes the basic values of the gonadotropins and the alterations after LH-RH administration were similar. Vast ranges of gonadotropin values in hypothalamosis syndromes indicates that these syndromes are not uniform and further studies of their etiology and pathogenetic patterns are necessary.
