Availability of ampicillin in biological fluids

The concentration of ampicillin in patients of mature cataract and glaucoma was determined in serum and aqueous humor. The drug was administered in single (500 mg) and multiple doses (500 mg every 6 h) and the levels were estimated 2, 4 and 6 h after single dose therapy and 1 h after the multiple dose. Peak drug levels after single doses were achieved between 2-4 h, below the minimum inhibitory concentration in 8 h. Effective prophylaxis can be maintained in multiple dose therapy.
