Facilitation and/or inhibition of growth of sarcoma-180 ascites tumour by BCG: effects of BCG on tumour cell membrane

BCG vaccine manufactured in India is growth-inhibitory to sarcoma 180 ascites tumor transplantable in syngeneic Swiss mice. BCG inoculated with a very low dose of tumor cells showed enhancement of tumor growth. Thus, BCG-induced tumor growth suppression or enhancement appeared to depend on the number of cells in the tumor inocula at the time of BCG injection. BCG may modulate the tumor cell membrane behavior during the BCG-tumor interactions. This phenomenon may have some relevance to the early events of the mechanism of BCG action.
