Erythropoietin (Ep) stimulates amino acid incorporation into the rat erythrocyte membranes, liver and kidney. This stimulation can be blocked by actinomycin D, cycloheximide, propanolol and indomethacin. Radioactive acetate incorporation into the lipid of erythrocyte membrane and kidney is also stimulated after administration of Ep. Ep-induced stimulation of acetate incorporation is also blocked by propanolol or indomethacin. In liver, amino acid incorporation is prominent in the soluble supernatant fraction. In the kidney amino acid incorporation is marked in the microsomal fraction. After Ep treatment, acetate is significantly incorporated into the lipid of kidney mitochondrial fraction. Ep increases the phospholipid and free cholesterol content of the erythrocyte membrane.
