As part of the special programme of the Brazilian Government details are given of mass oxamniquine treatment of about one million people from 8 States of Brazil with a high prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infection. The object is not to eliminate the disease but to reduce it to levels which can then be contained by socio-economic development. Mass chemotherapy reduces incidence, severity of the disease in young people and reduces transmission.
