Results of presumptive treatment of malaria in Orissa State

In 3 districts of Orissa State, India, 151 cases of Plasmodium vivax infection were treated with chloroquine 600 mg base, and only 6 (4%) still showed parasites 7 days later. 239 patients infected with P. falciparum were similarly treated and 7 days later only 8 (3.3%) still showed asexual parasites. It is concluded that this routine dose of chloroquine is adequate to treat malaria.
